Expert Care to Prevent Heart Attack & Restore Heart Health

Coronary artery disease (CAD) is the most common type of heart disease—and one of the leading causes of heart attacks and sudden cardiac events. At Heart & Vascular Clinic, our board-certified cardiologists use the latest diagnostic tools and personalized treatment plans to help patients detect, manage, and reduce the risks of coronary artery disease before it becomes life-threatening.

What Is Coronary Artery Disease?

Coronary artery disease occurs when the coronary arteries—the blood vessels that supply oxygen-rich blood to your heart—become narrowed or blocked due to a buildup of plaque. Plaque is made up of cholesterol, calcium, and other substances in the blood that accumulate over time.

As plaque builds up:

  • Blood flow to the heart decreases
  • The heart receives less oxygen
  • This may cause chest pain (angina), shortness of breath, fatigue, or even a heart attack
  • If a plaque ruptures, it can fully block the artery, leading to sudden cardiac arrest

What Increases My Risk for Coronary Artery Disease?

You may be at higher risk if you:

  • Are age 65 or older
  • Have diabetes, high blood pressure, or high cholesterol
  • Have a family history of heart disease
  • Are overweight or obese
  • Smoke or lead a sedentary lifestyle
  • Experience chronic stress or consume an unhealthy diet

High levels of LDL (bad cholesterol) and VLDL are especially dangerous, as they are key components of arterial plaque.

How Is Coronary Artery Disease Diagnosed?

Diagnosis begins with a full medical history, physical exam, and blood tests to check cholesterol and other markers.

Advanced diagnostic testing may include:

  • Electrocardiogram (ECG/EKG)
  • Echocardiogram
  • Cardiac stress testing (with or without imaging)
  • CT scan or CT coronary angiogram
  • Cardiac MRI
  • Nuclear stress testing
  • Coronary angiography using contrast dye and X-ray to visualize blockages

How Is Coronary Artery Disease Treated?

Most patients benefit from a combination of lifestyle changes, medications, and, in some cases, minimally invasive or surgical procedures.

Lifestyle Changes

  • Quit smoking
  • Eat a heart-healthy diet
  • Exercise regularly
  • Lose excess weight
  • Reduce stress

Medications May Include:

  • Cholesterol-lowering medications (statins)
  • Aspirin or blood thinners
  • Beta-blockers or calcium channel blockers
  • ACE inhibitors or ARBs
  • Nitrates or anti-anginal drugs like ranolazine

Procedures & Surgery:

  • Angioplasty and stent placement: A minimally invasive procedure to open blocked arteries and place a mesh tube to keep them open

  • Coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG): Open-heart surgery to reroute blood around severely blocked arteries
