General Overview

When the veins cannot take the blood back to the heart because of defective valves, Venous Insufficiency ensues. Your legs may also feel heavy, tired, restless, or achy. You may feel pain while walking or shortly after stopping. Venous Insufficiency may be associated with varicose veins. Varicose veins are swollen veins that you can see through the skin. They often look blue, bulging, and twisted. Large varicose veins can lead to skin changes like rashes, redness, and sores. According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), more than half of the nation has enlarged or varicose veins. Weakened leg valves force blood to back up. This action causes swollen veins, cramps, itching, pain, and restless legs. Age, obesity, hormone fluctuations, sitting/standing long periods at a time, and family history may cause some people to develop varicose veins.   The vein clinic at Heart and Vascular clinic is well-equipped with the latest technology to treat venous insufficiency and varicose veins. Our vein center specialists have a vast experience in treating patients suffering from severe venous disease.

Types of Services Offered

Venous Insufficiency and Varicose veins are evaluated in a physical exam. We may perform additional diagnostic tests, such as a Duplex Ultrasound to visualize the patient’s vein problem. After performance of tests, the doctor recommends appropriate treatment procedures to eradicate the condition. Doctors may prescribe the following treatment solutions:

Lifestyle Changes

Venous Insufficiency can be improved by lifestyle changes in some cases. These changes help to reduce the patient’s pain or prevent the vein problem from getting worse. Lifestyle changes include avoiding long standing or sitting postures, avoiding crossed legs, controlling weight gain, avoiding tight clothing and high heels. We also offer compression stockings to help with Venous Insufficiency. We try conservative management for good amount of time to see if symptoms improve.   If the symptoms persist in spite of conservative management we offer:
  • Endovenous Ablation Therapy with Clarivein
  • Radiofrequency Ablation or Varithen
  • Sclerotherapy
  • Micro-Phlebectomy
