General Overview

EKG Electrocardiography Electrocardiograms (EKGs) are non-invasive, painless tests offered at Heart and Vascular Clinic, which are ordered by the doctor to discover potential heart problems. The heart’s changes in electric output activity are measured. The EKG may indicate a current or previous heart attack, also known as a myocardial infarction. One of the primary uses of the EKG is to measure how fast the heart is beating. Heartbeat rhythm, timing, and actual strength of the electric signals passed through the heart are measured. Arrhythmia and heart failure may be indicated by the test. By recording electrical impulses of the heart, doctors can determine whether the heart chambers are of proper size and in the right position. An EKG measures heart rate and heartbeat regularity. The electrocardiogram allows doctors of evaluate devices, such as pacemakers, and indirectly allows them to evaluate how well current prescription medicines are working.

How It’s Done

An EKG or Electrocardiography can be performed in the doctor’s office. Sometimes, a special EKG paste or small pads soaked in alcohol may be placed between the electrodes and skin to improve the conduction of electrical impulses. If disposable electrodes are used, alcohol or EKG paste is not required.

Any Side Effects?

Most patients report that the tests cause no pain. Some temporary discomfort may occur as electrodes are attached or removed from the skin. Some patients develop allergic reactions to the electrodes.

Next Steps

Generally, no follow-up or special care is required after electrocardiography. The patient should resume normal diet and activities unless he or she is otherwise instructed by the clinic physician. Patients may receive prescription medicines to treat a medical condition after diagnostic tests are performed.
