General Overview

Abdominal Aortic Ultrasound Ultrasound is the easiest way to diagnose abdominal aortic aneurysm which is a dilation of part of the aorta that is within the abdomen. Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA) usually shows no symptoms till it ruptures. The Abdominal Aortic Ultrasound is a painless and non-invasive method looking for AAA. It is recommended for people who are at risk of having AAA and thus at risk of aortic rupture.

How It’s Done

The procedure involves the use of a small transducer and ultrasound gel which are directly placed on the skin. The transducer collects the high frequency sounds that are transmitted from the probe through the gel into the body; and uses these sound waves to create an image. Ultrasound images capture in real time. Thus, they can show the structure and movement of the body’s internal organs, as well as blood flowing through blood vessels.

Any Side Effects?

The abdominal aortic ultrasound imaging is a safe and painless technique. It does not involve radiation like X-Rays and other imaging texts. Thus, there are no major notable side-effects known so far.

Next Steps

If the Ultrasound shows evidence of aneurysm, then the physician will go over further management plan.
